UNC Charlotte School of Nursing Faculty Honored to Attend and Present at NCNA’s Annual Psych Retreat

This past weekend, the North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA) hosted its annual Psych Retreat, a vital gathering for nurses and healthcare professionals dedicated to psychiatric and mental health care. This event offers an invaluable platform to delve into emerging trends, best practices, treatment approaches, and policies shaping the future of mental health nursing.

UNC Charlotte’s Contribution

This year, UNC Charlotte School of Nursing faculty members Lufei Young, PhD, ACNP-BC, and Teresa Cronell, EdD, MSN, CCRN, CNE, were honored to attend and contribute to the retreat by presenting their research session titled “Enhancing Communication and Team Building Through Implicit Bias Mitigation and Cultural Humility Development.” In their session, our faculty:

  • Explore how cultural humility can foster effective communication and teamwork in diverse healthcare environments.
  • Highlight the importance of addressing implicit bias in nursing practice.
  • Demonstrate strategies to identify and adapt to personal biases through critical self-reflection.

Held annually, the NCNA Psych Retreat features an engaging lineup of sessions that address crucial topics in mental health, including high-yield psychopharmacology, disparities in perinatal mental health, substance use disorders, and chronic pain management. The retreat is designed for a broad audience, including nurses, advanced practice nurses, students, and other healthcare professionals committed to advancing mental health care delivery.
