In Memory of Dr. Florence Okoro: A Cherished Scholar, Mentor and Global Health Advocate

The UNC Charlotte School of Nursing community is mourning the loss of Associate Professor Dr. Florence Okoro, who passed away on June 16, 2026.

A valued faculty member since 2015, Dr. Okoro made a profound impact through her research in chronic illness management and her pioneering efforts in global engagement—including establishing an international COIL course for doctoral nursing students across three countries. She was widely known for her dedication to cross-cultural collaboration, research partnerships across Africa, and deep mentorship of future nurse leaders.

“Dr. Florence Okoro exemplified the highest ideals of nursing as an educator, scholar and global health advocate,” shared Judith Cornelius, interim director of the School of Nursing. “She was a trusted colleague, a compassionate mentor and an inspiring leader whose legacy will continue to influence nursing education for years to come.”
