Protecting Niner Nation: Nursing Students and Student Health Partner for Campus Flu Clinics
As flu season approaches, UNC Charlotte’s Student Health Center and School of Nursing have joined forces to protect campus health through a series of accessible, on-campus flu vaccine clinics. The initiative has already demonstrated significant impact, averaging around 100 vaccinations per clinic for students, faculty, and staff.
Beyond safeguarding the campus community, the clinics provide invaluable experiential learning for UNC Charlotte nursing students. Participating during the first four October clinics, student nurses gain direct hands-on experience administering vaccines and interacting with patients in a high-volume clinical environment.
A participating UNC Charlotte nursing alumna highlighted the dual impact of the program:
“As an alum of UNC Charlotte’s nursing program, I’m always happy to be part of the student’s learning experience. It is great to see the students gain confidence through this experience. I appreciate the collaboration with the Nursing students that helps protect our campus community from flu.”
Two remaining clinic dates feature nursing student participation, both taking place in Room 340 of the Popp Martin Student Union:
- Thursday, October 15: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Popp Martin Student Union, Room 340)
- Tuesday, October 20: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Popp Martin Student Union, Room 340)
The October 20 clinic coincides with Wellapalooza, Student Health’s annual interactive wellness fair taking place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Room 340. Wellapalooza offers students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to discover the 8 Dimensions of Wellness and engage with vital campus and community health resources. Attendees can also enter a drawing for a $100 gift card and pick up free T-shirts while supplies last.
Vaccination efforts will continue past October 20, with subsequent clinics directly staffed by Student Health Center personnel. Campus community members are encouraged to visit upcoming clinics or scan the QR code on event flyers to schedule their flu shot appointment in advance.
