UNC CHARLOTTE SCHOOL OF NURSING DAISY AWARD ® RECOGNITION

UNC CHARLOTTE SCHOOL OF NURSING DAISY AWARD ® RECOGNITION

The DAISY Foundation provides authentic appreciation to nurses that reinforces the importance of compassion in healthcare, nursing education, and leading nursing teams.

WHAT: A nonprofit organization that honors nurses for the extraordinary compassionate, skillful care they provide no matter where they practice, in whatever role they serve, throughout their careers–from nursing students, bedside nurses, teams, educators, and leaders. Active in over 6,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing, internationally.

WHY: Established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died from complications of ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated not only the immense clinical skill but also the enormous compassion shown to Pat and his family by his nurses. When Pat died, they felt compelled to say, “thank you!” to nurses in a very personal way.

ELIGIBILITY: The Student Nurse Award nomination is limited to prelicensure graduating seniors. Nurse educators will nominate from the list of graduating prelicensure senior students. The Nurse Educator nomination is open to any educator, class or clinical, across all nursing programs. Any UNC Charlotte nursing student can nominate a nurse educator. All nominations are then blinded and scored by the DAISY Committee based on predetermined criteria. The program will honor one Student Nurse Award and one Nurse Educator Award each semester during a public ceremony. Each Honoree receives a certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.

IMPACT: Ask us about the research supporting the powerful impact of meaningful recognition and The DAISY Award on nurses and organizational culture. The DAISY Foundation provides honoree benefits to support nurses personally and professionally.
